We, The People

Minnie Bee's Rant

Last week, President Obama had what I consider to be a seminal moment in his acceptance speech of the Democratic nomination for President at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.  He reminded us about citizenship, "a word at the very heart of our founding, at the very essence of our democracy..."
Our obligations as citizens of the United States of America are something we are seldom reminded about.  President Obama did not elaborate on these obligations in his speech, so before I continue, I'll do it here: (1) support the Constitution; (2) renounce and abjure absolutely and entirely all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty...; (3) support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; (4) bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and (5) a. bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; or b. perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; or c. perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law.
If you are a naturalized citizen, you are reminded about these obligations when you take the "Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America", just as my own mother did many years ago.  Yet those of us who are citizens by birth of our great country, are reminded rarely and randomly, mostly during our grade school years.  It should be just the opposite.  We should be reminded about our obligations as citizens repeatedly because, as President Obama said, citizenship is "...the idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another, and to future generations."
Consequently, the very nature of our citizenship has broad political and economic implications for us. From a political standpoint, understanding the responsibilities of our citizenship, in my opinion, defuses the notion that government is something that we should be afraid of.  After all, the very constitution which we are obliged to support as citizens of the United States of America begins with the words "We the people."  Our government, at any and all levels, is made up of us, the people, the citizens.  If we do not trust the government, then we do not trust ourselves.  How do we trust ourselves?  By educating ourselves about candidates and issues, by participating in our community and our government , by voting.  In other words, by fulfilling our obligations of citizenship.
Most of us understand our obligation as citizens to support our country militarily.  We honor and support our troops, and we use that obligation as a rationale to uphold the right of gun ownership. However, we all tend to forget our obligations of citizenship when it comes to politics and the economy.  A good citizen puts country before political party.  If you are a politician elected by the people, it is your duty to work together across party lines to solve our country's problems.  A good citizen puts country before profit.  If you are a business owner, you give back to your country by using "Made In USA" products and materials whenever possible, and by keeping and creating jobs at home.  If you are a consumer, you buy "Made In U.S.A." goods and products before goods and products that are made elsewhere.
Finally, all of us, as good citizens, must pay our fair share of taxes.  Taxes don't support some nebulous "government."  They support us, the citizens, we, the people.  Taxes are the revenues that allow our country to pay for our schools, our public employees - teachers, police, firefighters, soldiers, our roads, bridges, public water and sewage.  Without taxes, we cannot educate all of our children, keep our families and ourselves safe and secure, and pay our debts. Without taxes, we will become just another poor third world country with sewage clogging our streets, and children who are unable to read, write, or compete in the global economy except in a sweatshop. We are citizens.  We are the government.  We, the People.
