Romney's Plan For Our Economy - What He's Not Saying

     Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, Republican nominee for President of the United States, stated in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention that if elected President, he will create 12 million jobs - but he didn't say specifically how. Instead, he listed five steps he would take, that have already been tried or begun by President Obama, that might or might not ultimately create jobs. Reality is that unless there is some giant, unexpected and unexplained uptick in the economy - a sudden upswing in home sales, for example, or a sudden surge in the demand for American-made products -  jobs don't just automatically get created by doing things like paying down the nation's debt.

     In the same speech, Romney talked tough about our foreign policy.  Alluding to Iran's nuclear activities, Romney said that he thought the United States should do more than just talk to Iran, implying that we should take action in Iran.  Romney also said that if he were President, Russia would see "less flexibility and more backbone" from the United States, again alluding to potential military action. As we already know from our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, taking on a war costs a tremendous amount of money.  Romney did not say how he would pay for a third U.S. conflict/war, but according to him, it won't be paid for by an increase in taxes because Romney said that he won't raise taxes.

     In addition, if a Romney administration takes military action in Iran or elsewhere, it would be challenged to find enough young men and women who are ready, willing, and/or able to fight.  Our military and national guard forces are already stretched thin. They have been deployed and re-deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 11 years. Also, serving in the U.S. armed forces is strictly voluntary.  So how would Romney find enough manpower to implement and sustain more U.S. military action, while paying down our debt and not raising taxes?  Romney hasn't told us that either. But I predict that what Romney is not telling us is that the way he plans to create a multitude of jobs, and find the men and women necessary to fight another war is to bring back the draft.          

     Bringing back the draft for a third U.S. conflict/war, while maintaining U.S. forces in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, would quickly create jobs, involuntarily employing hundreds of thousands, even millions of young men and women, particularly from the poor and middle classes, who are presently unemployed.  In addition, the number of military contracts to the private sector would increase, giving millions of taxpayer dollars to Romney's wealthy friends, the owners of multinational corporations.  Of course, those corporations would still manufacture most of their products overseas, but some jobs instantly would be created in science and technology and in support personnel, such as administrative and medical support. 

     Bringing back  the draft would result in a boost to the U.S. economy, causing unemployment to decrease and spending to increase.  But, as always, poor and middle class Americans would bear the ultimate burden.  Because poor and middle class families make up approximately 95 - 99% of our population, they would be drafted in large numbers, sustaining the most war-related disabilities and deaths, devastating poor and middle class American families.  They would pay for the war, not only with the debt passed on to their children, but also with their lives.

     Looking at all aspects of Romney's promises for "restoring" the future of America - creating 12 million jobs, taking military action, and not raising taxes - just doesn't add up. Romney may know what he's really talking about, or he may just be blowing smoke.  Either way, we don't know for sure, and he's not saying.
