Less Than Nothing

     There have been a lot of facts and figures thrown around by politicians in this election season.  Evaluate the promises made by Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, however, and it's easy to see that they don't add up.  Mr. Romney says that if elected, he will (1) create 12 million new jobs, and  (2) give foreign aid to developing nations, plus (3) establish United States energy independence, and (4) pay down our deficit, all while subtracting (5) the cost of giving more tax cuts to all Americans. 

     As President Clinton said at the Democratic National Convention, "the arithmetic doesn't add up."  Either that, or Romney will make us pay some other way.  After all, Romney is saying that all Americans need to make sacrifices.  If those sacrifices involve working toward common goals that benefit all Americans, I can live with that.  But that doesn't appear to be what Mr. Romney means.  He's already volunteered senior citizens in nursing homes, single mothers, and people with disabilities, including special needs children, for sacrifices by promising to cut Medicaid by one-third.  He's also volunteered the middle class for sacrifices by promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act , aka "Obama care," that would do away with the right of insurance companies to refuse insurance to someone due to a "pre-existing condition," and allow parents to keep their dependent young adult children on their medical insurance until age 26. 

     Finally, Romney has hitched his wagon to his vice-presidential pick, Paul Ryan, who would like to volunteer senior citizens for sacrifices by replacing Medicare with vouchers that apply towards the purchase of medical insurance.  I can tell you that my friends and I are not exactly thrilled by the prospect of our eighty and ninety-year-old parents and grandparents trying to negotiate through a maze of insurance companies, vouchers in hand, while these companies, free of the bothersome regulations on business that Romney and Ryan have promised to do away with, prey on unsuspecting seniors, who will be powerless without regulations or regulation enforcement in place.

     While Romney works the numbers to make his arithmetic add up, I wonder what sacrifices he has in mind for the wealthy?  He has hinted at sacrificing tax deductions, but I suspect that Romney, his family, and friends can well afford that sacrifice much more than the middle class families who get a tax deduction on their home mortgages, or the working parents who get child care deductions for their children's' day care, or non-profits who rely on donations made by middle class folks who can afford to contribute when they can take a deduction for a charitable contribution.  So far, Romney's numbers add up to one thing - less than nothing for the middle class, the working poor, the elderly, and children.
