Minnie Bee's Rant
(Ed. Note: We have been off the grid for the past two
months due to family issues, most notably a death in our family. We are happy to be back!)
Since the present recession began, a topic
that should be studied and discussed much more than it has been is job creation
and just who creates jobs. Republicans
maintain that it is not government's place to create jobs; they say that job
creation is the place of the private sector within the structure of the free
market. Most Republicans believe that
state governments should cut personnel to save money, and that the federal
government should help the private sector to create jobs by lowering corporate
taxes, decreasing regulation, and reducing tax rates for well-to-do Americans,
who, they say, are the job-creators.
But is one of the goals of the private sector to create jobs? Obviously not. Former Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR) recently
stated on a network television talk show that it's not the purpose of business
to create jobs; the purpose of business, Huckabee said, is to "make a
profit." This is the real agenda of
corporations and the wealthy people who run them. Making a profit is how the wealthy people who
didn't inherit their wealth became wealthy.
Corporations, and all business, are about making a profit, and making a
profit does not necessarily equal job creation.
In fact, realistically, the single-minded pursuit of making money in
today's business environment is at odds with job creation. This is the flaw in
leaving job creation to the private sector - at least as business exists today.
Republicans,
however, aren't entirely wrong about job creation; they're just ignoring, or
out of touch, with the values of most American businesses today. At one time, the way that American businesses
made a profit was to come up with a new product or service, create a demand for that new product or
service, and then, supply that demand by hiring American workers to make the
new product or provide the new service.
This was a win-win situation for everyone. New jobs were created, and with money in
their pockets, American workers consumed the products and services offered by
American businesses, and the American economy thrived.
Unfortunately, this is not the way most
American businesses are making profits today.
Today, most American CEOs, following the methods used by Mitt Romney and
his colleagues at Bain Capital, have found more immediate shortcuts for making
a profit. These methods include laying
off workers, demanding that those employees who are not laid off do more with
less, and outsourcing jobs to countries with cheap labor and minimum to zero
regulation. These shortcuts work to
increase profits, but work against the American economy by decreasing American
jobs.
Most Democrats maintain that it is
primarily through the creation of American jobs, particularly jobs that pay a
decent living wage, that the American economy will be revived. They believe that state governments should
hire more teachers to educate our children, and more firefighters and police to
maintain and support our infrastructure and keep us safe. They also believe
that the federal government can help to create jobs not only through hiring
government employees, but through government-funded projects and programs that
replace, rebuild, and refurbish infrastructure, such as highways, bridges,
dams, and public buildings. This was the over-arching concept behind President
Obama's American Jobs Act that Republican lawmakers, opposing the involvement
of the federal government in jobs creation, blocked in Congress.
Should the government be a jobs
creator? I seriously doubt that Americans
who have been unemployed for three, six, or 12 plus months care whether they are
hired by the private or the public sector.
These people need jobs, making enough to support themselves and their
families, having health care benefits for themselves and their families, and
restoring faith in themselves and their country. During the Great Depression of the twentieth
century, President Franklin Roosevelt and Congress worked together for the
benefit of our country to make the federal government a temporary jobs creator. Known as the "New Deal," these
government-funded projects and programs worked to put the American economy and
the American people back on their feet, while benefitting the U.S.
infrastructure in ways that we are still using and enjoying today. We can do this again, if Republican lawmakers
in Congress step up to the plate, and put country before politics.
And what of the private sector as a jobs creator? Contrary to popular belief, much of the
private sector, as President Obama recently said, is "doing
fine." In fact, financial, automotive, energy, and retail markets are all
making record profits. They're just not
creating many American jobs. The private
sector needs to step up to the plate and start putting our country before pure profit. They need to start earning a profit, not just making
a profit. They need to start earning a profit through American invention,
innovation, and ingenuity, as they did before.
They need to bring outsourced jobs back to the USA, and fill those jobs
with American workers. They need to come
up with new products and services, create a demand for those products and
services, and create U.S. jobs by hiring American workers to make those products
and provide those services. With
politicians putting country before politics, and American business putting
country before profit, Americans will be back to work, the American economy
will be robust, and we will all do well.
