On April 17, 2011, I posted a rant titled
" Entitlements : Unwealthy : : Benefits : Wealthy." For those of us who need a refresher, the
title of this post is done in an analogy format, expressing an inferred
relationship between one specific idea to another specific idea. In this case,
I was saying that so-called "entitlements" for the poor, working, and
middle classes are the same thing as so-called "benefits" for the
"upper" class - the wealthiest Americans.
If you don't feel the need to go back and
read this post, I basically wrote about the power of words on our perceptions. In this case, the word
"entitlement" is typically used by politicians to dial up the idea
that one feels entitled to something - a favor, a "perk," monetary
compensation, a gift - without necessarily being deserving of that something,
such as a government "handout." Furthermore, these politicians, regardless of
political party, always use the word "entitlement" in association
with government programs that help poor, working class, and middle class
Americans - programs such as Social
Security, Medicare, Medicaid, college tuition assistance, unemployment
insurance, and food stamps. On the other
hand, the word "benefit" is most often used by politicians to
describe something - a favor, a "perk," monetary compensation, a gift
- that one is deserving of, for example, tax cuts, loopholes, and subsidies for
the wealthiest Americans and corporations, such as the Bush tax cuts, the cap on
taxable income for Social Security ($106K), and oil subsidies.
Republican members of Congress have been
hitting "entitlements" hard, saying that in order to reduce our debt
and make our country more solvent, we must cut government "entitlements." However, they refuse to put
"benefits" on the table. This standard
is now being carried by the soon to be official presidential ticket of
Romney-Ryan. Going back to the concept of
what an "entitlement" is as opposed to what a "benefit" is,
these politicians are putting the burden of cutting government spending
squarely on the shoulders of the poor, working, and middle class Americans
without disturbing America's wealthiest.
Putting some of this into concrete terms,
federal spending on welfare has been about 6.4% of the federal budget, or about 191 billion
dollars per year, depending on whose calculations you agree with, while the
Bush tax cuts, depending again on whose calculation you agree with, has cost us
a total of about 1.35 trillion dollars for the past 10 years. Mitt Romney, a billionaire, paid about 13% in
federal taxes on some income, we're not sure what, in 2010, while I, a middle
class American, paid about 28% on my earned wages for the same year. $66,384 -
$130K is the average tax savings for top American
wage earners, and $19,855 is the
average savings for a family in the wealthiest 5% of Americans, under the tax
cut extension signed into law in December 2010, while $107 is the average savings for a family in the poorest 20% under the same law.
Exxon-Mobil Oil Co., a multimillion dollar, multinational corporation,
paid $0 in taxes for 2009, while I paid about $2,000 for the same year.
This is our economic double standard. Does this double standard promote
democracy and the underlying concept of the Declaration of Independence that
" ...all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?" I believe it does not. If we are to reduce government spending by
reducing or cutting specific government programs, and I believe we have to,
then we should begin by eliminating our economic double standard regarding
those programs. If we are to reduce
government spending, then all government programs that give monetary
compensation to people, corporations, and organizations should be scrutinized. All of these programs should be on the table,
and we should begin by first cutting waste, and then, by reducing or cutting
programs that help those with deep pockets, before we reduce or cut those
programs that help those with shallow pockets or no pockets at all.
